Miri Ben-Ari – AFROStrings

Miri Ben-Ari:  a Grammy™ Award winner and UN Ambassador, originally from Israel, has created her very own sound, a revolutionary fusion of classical, soul and dance music, which can be heard in her numerous collaborations with pop icons such as Jay Z, Kanye West and Alicia Keys among others. Through her music, Miri has been able to inspire millions of fans worldwide. She will introduce to the ID Festival her newest creation – – unique combination of urban, classical and African music. In addition to her musical activity, Miri Ben-Ari is a co-founder and CEO of GEDENK, a non-profit organization that runs creative programs to promote tolerance and Holocaust awareness among young people.

Moroccan oud player Alaa Zouiten and La Caravane du Maghreb will open with a mix of North African sounds, flamenco and jazz.

biographies

Alaa Zouiten was born in Casablanca, Morocco. He studied the oud at the Conservatoire National de Marrakech and became the sideman of the fusion band »Jbara«. He has played at numerous Moroccan festivals, including the Essaouira Gnaoua Festival, the Grand Festival de Casablanca and the Mawazine in Rabat. In addition to festivals, he has directed and performed with the »Global Arabian Music Orchestra« at the Berlin Philharmonie, performed in »Requiem for Syria« at the Dresden Philharmonie as well as in the tour »TALKING OUD 2018«, which took place in France and Germany. Zouiten currently works with top-class musicians in various fusion projects in Berlin.

La Caravane du Maghreb is composed of musicians Youssef Belbachir, Miloud Messabih and Redha Bendib. Belbachir has been making Moroccan music in Berlin with a wide variety of musicians for many years. Miloud Messabih from Algeria later joined him, playing the accordion and the large cylinder drum (T’Bal), among other instruments. Algerian percussionist Redha Bendib keeps the caravan moving to his unique beats. Together they interpret traditional songs from North African culture such as Gnawa, Chaabi and Amazigh with enthusiasm.

Miri Ben-Ari is a Grammy Award-Winning violinist, producer and UN Goodwill Ambassador of Music to the United Nations, originally from Israel. As a classically trained violinist who studied under Isaac Stern, she creates a revolutionary fusion of classical, Hip-Hop, soul and dance.

Notable collaborations include those with »Kanye West, Jay Z, Wyclef Jean, Alicia Keys, Wynton Marsalis, Britney Spears, Maroon 5, Akon, Patti Labelle, Brandy, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, John Legend, Aventura, Diamond Platnumz, and Armin Van Buuren«, among others.

She has received many notable awards, among them the »Apollo Legend Award«, hosted by the Apollo theater in New York City, the »International Jewish Woman To Watch of 2007 Award«, the »2008 Israel Film Festival Visionary Award«, »The American Society for Yad Vashem Award«, the »Young & Powerful for Obama 2011 Rising Star Award«, the »Martin Luther King Award« as well as the »2012 Big Vision Awards«. In 2011, then First Lady Michelle Obama invited her to the White House to perform and a year later she was invited to perform for U.S. President Barack Obama. Her most recent collaboration with African artist Diamond Platnumz entitled Baila reached the 2019 top 40 number one position in Africa and won the 2019 Best Collaboration from African Entertainment Awards USA.
