Piano Combo III – LUX

LUX is an innovative project dealing with a component that is usually neglected in classical music concerts: light. Matan Porat invites the audience on an intensive journey through the different phases of one single day, in which each piece of music directly relates to a specific phase by its title and content. The music selection encompasses different eras: Gregorian chants, romantic works by Beethoven, Schumann and Liszt, together with pieces from the beginning of the 20th century- Debussy, Scriabin, Bartók and contemporary pieces by Thomas Adès and Matthias Pintscher. The show unfolds in one continuous breath, without intermission or applause between pieces, thereby, in combination with lighting design by Jörg Bittner, allowing an uninterrupted experience of the day’s journey into night.

biography

Praised by the New York Times for his »magnificent sound and breath of expression«, pianist and composer Matan Porat has performed at distinguished venues including the Philharmonie in Berlin, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall in London, Auditorium du Louvre and Salle Gaveau in Paris and the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, and with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Known for his unique, narrative-based programming, Porat’s varied repertoire ranges from the complete Bach Partitas and Schubert Sonatas to Ives’ Concord Sonata and the Ligeti Concerto. His debut CD for MIRARE, »Variations on a theme by Scarlatti« – a 65-minute program of pieces from Couperin to Boulez which all relate to Scarlatti’s Sonata K. 32 – was praised as »a fantastic album that one should hear over and over again« by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. His following CD, Lux, is a recital of pieces around light, from dawn to nightfall, featuring Porat’s solo arrangement of Debussy’s »Prélude à l’après midi d’un Faune«.
